My Mother

Rita Hawes

She was fearless with bears,
and wood fires.
Bring on a good storm!
Let the house burn down!
Where’s the bear?

Life gave her babies
two at a time.
Placing them inside a dresser drawer
one at each end,
she kept them close by the fire.

Lifting those heavy chunks of maple and elm,
lifting and tossing
them in,
during storms and long after the bears had left.
