Apple Trees at the Farm

Joyce Sutphen

Like the people they
have grown ancient.

Props assist the branches,
the trunks are cracked

and yellow leaves (a few)
are on the boughs

want these trees to die.

Look—the old trees
are heavy with apples.

Surely those who
carry such weight

will be here forever.
